(The Fifth in the Series-III of ‘The 7 Mavens of SOPs’)

Profound Gratitudes, yet again from ᵭᵱᵬ’the मितवा’ for Great Response to Series-I & II, and a grand welcome to Series-III of ‘The 7 Mavens of SOPs’. As you know by now, ‘ᵭᵱᵬ’ is my initial and ‘मितवा’ (Mi-Ta-Wa), a Marathi acronym for Friend (मित्र -Mi ), Philosopher (तत्वज्ञ- Ta) and Guide (वाटाड्या- Wa), my humble role to ‘Sit Back and Give Back’, after 4 decades of career.
Series Title: ‘7 Mavens of SOPs’ is expression for instilling some of my learning as “seven propositions in sets of seven SOPs (norms)”, befitting the human mental capacity and attention span. I observed and learnt during the early to middle part of my journey that Plans, Projections and Predictions (3Ps) are three essentials of entrepreneurial endeavors. However, further in the professional voyage, I invariably found myself, into a whirling swamp, unknowingly, unwantedly, and unavoidably. The spinners of this swamp were quite powerful that all the 3Ps would go for a big toss. I have tried to sum up these 7 Spinners Of Predictability in the picture alongside and state them in the paragraphs below:
Volatility: Life is a like a marketplace where an individual trades his time expecting the returns which he can spend to survive, live, and thrive. This marketplace is hugely influenced by the real markets. The volatility is caused by swindling swings around the average value of return on investment and the vast degree of variation in the prices. It is the first dreadful Spinner Of Predictability both for personal and professional aspects. Appropriate appreciation of the volatility and heedful hedging are the two best inhibitors of this Spinner.
Vindictivity: We all know that every action meets up with equal and opposite reaction. This is a natural tendency for a vengeance, vindictiveness or Vindictivity. There are three types of this Spinner which are prominent persecutor Of Predictability: Political, Religious and Ecological. Their impact is not only alarming but abrupt. It is like a time bomb operated by a peculiar threshold. In the first two types the threshold is mostly triggered by (Social Media) Virality. In case of Ecological Vindictivity the threshold is like ‘critical mass’ in radioactivity. But when those thresholds will reach is uncertain. Prudence, Plan B, and Pre-Conceived Interim Continuity Measures can only diminish the impact.
Variability: Nature has made no two things alike thus rendering variability a part and parcel of both work and life. The brain prefers constancy and consistency on one hand but loves to explore the novelty on the other. The state of equilibrium, between these two divergent edges is the best bliss to be, at least for the logical length of time. However, the elements of enveloping systems, activated by the law of variability (or variation, variedness), endanger this equilibrium. Composure and Content can combat this Spinner; and Restrain and Resilience can help restore the equilibrium.
Variety: The dilemma and debate, ‘Digitization – A boon or bane?’, continues academically but practically it has invaded, nearly, every aspect of life. The digitization is driven by data and it churns the data in turn. The variety of the data it turns out is like a friendly looking frenzy. It is made to look attractive enough to be addictive. It is appealing but often off-tracking. It makes you burn the proverbial midnight oil; and more you toil deeper you land into turmoil. But of course, selectivity can save, and alertness sure can brave this spinner.
Veracity: The commoners’ source of data and information has a question mark attached to it. How authentic, how much reliable is it? With Many-mosm (many Master of Social Media), it is crazy out over there. Validity or accuracy and correctness, and means of verification for both, is another immediate concern. All these need to be addressed otherwise the GIGO effect appears. Basis Vs Bias, Noise Vs Voice, normality, and clean-ness are some of the screeners which must be put up to contain this spinner. Common sense (and not common practice), Practice, Patience and cross-referencing can come handy for subsiding this spinner .
Velocity: The data differentiation leads to information which actuates insights for action. There needs to be reasonable amount of time for completion of such action. One research says that 90% of all the available data is generated in last few years. This mindboggling multidirectional speed (and the amount or Volume) at which the data is getting generated is simply beyond the human comprehension. Even the ferocity of information free flow is too fast and vast to let the forecast last long. Together, they drag and drain the brain. The best way to curtail this spinner is to select the slice of space to operate within; and install filters to follow the flow, only of the significant data and information.
Virtuality: Human race is wired to be a societal animal. Whether it is for personal reasons or professional, a physical interaction boosts the productivity. Virtuality is taking over this very deep-rooted practice of proximity , due to current conditions catalyzed by digitization. It is the new reality confronting all of us. However, it is impairing productivity and influencing predictability. It will continue to do so till such time the new norms necessary for this shift of paradigm are ascertained and adopted. Self-evolution to match the surrounding revolution is the only solution for this spinner of virtuality.
I am sure most of the valued readers are aware of the verbalization done here. However, it is a sincere attempt to alert them to be vigilant so that they emerge victorious against the vulnerability of this vicious vortex of 7Vs – The 7Spinners Of Predictability.
