(The Third in the Series-III of ‘The 7 Mavens of SOPs’)

Profound Gratitude’s, yet again from ᵭᵱᵬ’the मितवा’ for Great Response to Series-I & II, and a grand welcome to Series-III of ‘The 7 Mavens of SOPs’. As you know by now, ‘ᵭᵱᵬ’ is my initial and ‘मितवा’, a Marathi acronym for Friend (मित्र), Philosopher (तत्वज्ञ) and Guide (वाटाड्या), my humble role to ‘Sit Back and Give Back’, after 4 decades of career.
Series Title: ‘7 Mavens of SOPs’ is expression for instilling some of my learnings as “seven propositions in sets of seven SOPs (norms)”, befitting the human mental capacity and attention span. This write up is continuation of my thoughts from the previous account of ‘7 Steps Of Powering-People’. ‘Smart’ has been quite in vogue, smart vs hard work, SMART goals, smart coders etc. In the process of Powering-People, to seed the ‘7Smarteners’, especially in the young minds, is the prerequisite ‘of PresenTimes’ for educators and employers alike.
Smartener Of Pursuance: SMART, Specific-Measurable-Achievable-Realistic-Timebound, has ever been the part of goal setting process. However, NeoGen needs be taught a new manifestation of SMART, for them to pursue their goals in today’s scenario. Their goals should have a Stretch, a set of dynamic Metrics, inbuilt triggers for Action, mechanism to establish the Relevance periodically and finally but fundamentally the Timing which, like in any other discipline, is the master key to always make it good.
Smartener Of Planning: Path of pursuance requires affirmation of a right approach. And this smartener enumerates the five essential elements, of course in addition to basic structure of the plan (i.e. STARTER: Sequence/ Task/Activity/Responsibility/Timeline/Enablement/Resource). VITAL it is to provide for Sufficiency (1.33X units of efforts if 1X is required) in the plan, for the potential unfavourable changes in the assumptions. Another major consideration is the Mutability of the plan. As an when necessary there should be a course correction in line with the forethought during planning. Alertness to foresee, Suppleness to flex and Quickness to fix defines Agility which is activator for mutability. Mr. Murphy eats, Fail-Safing and Fool-Proofing on a Fruit Platter, making Resilience a prime parameter, particularly post pandemic. It is difficult to expect the unexpected and hence no escape but to experience it. Better build the buoyancy in the plan to bounce back rather than letting the ship sink. Often articulated but seldom acted upon by most is Thoroughness of the plan. Optimum efforts on this will ensure minimal efforts on error-correction. It is unwise to add ‘Faults-in-Sight’ on Mr. Murphy’s Fruit Platter.
Smartener Of Perspective: In the vorticity created by the crazily hazy VUCAtmosphere, Sensemaking is a prized possession. It is ability of weeding out noise from voice and making informative interpretation from devastating data dumps. art of using basic maths in magically quick manner, Mathemagics, is an absolute must armour in the arsenal. Numb with numbers is dumb with data and will eventually succumb to the swamping speed of surroundings. One more significant skill required is the Analytics which is for systematic search of meaningful patterns in data. It aims at deriving information and developing insights and aids sensemaking. The sensemaking combined with intuition can lead to effective decision making. Demons of Disruptions and Distractions are the ill bi-product of tech-evolution and one unwillingly and unknowingly falls into their trap. The former dislodges you on a tactical front whereas the latter displaces on transactional. Repetitive rehearsals of Refocussing to restore efforts and redirect energies can only help the continuous onslaught of these demons. AS ‘We the Winner’ tactic takes over ‘Me the Master’ stance, Tactfulness automatically assumes an important role: Carefulness in avoiding giving offense to others; considerate kindness; thoughtfulness in beginning with end in mind; subtly skilful handling of delicate and difficult situations; finesse, fairness diplomacy, discreetness in dealing with people, being some of its tried and tested tenets.
Smartener Of Potential: EVERY individual is unique but with one common feature of immense potential. The educator and employer endeavor to explore and exploit it. If this additional smartener is exercised to enhance such efforts, they will become reasonably future-ready and their journey quite fulfilling. ONE of the differentiators for humans is their nature to think. Facilitating them with the ability of structure this thinking, can be a game changer for them. To envisage both the ends, Start and Finish, and build the bridge between, element by element is a basic inroad to StructuredD (D denotes design) Thinking. Linking it to Customer at Finish end Provider at Start end and syncing the deliverables element by element come next. THE new work environ will be the virtual reality. In fact, it will be Virtuality embedded Reality. And different type of skillset will be needed for this Manoeuvring of Virtuality Embedded Reality or the MoVeR Skills. Such skills for ease to glide through and guide the new work environ are required to be defined and delivered right away. APPROACH of deriving ideas, patterns, or experiences from a broad and diverse range of sources and applying them to situations on hand is Adoptive Innovation. A carefully crafted learning curriculum or re-learning content is indeed a need of the hour to impart this skill. WITH the knowledge outburst of today’s time, there will be at least 4-6 cycles of acquiring new competencies even in the same field. Therefore, a formal skill development program for inculcating the Re-imagining ability becomes absolute necessity. GIVEN that the rate of change outside is not matched by that inside, the extinction is evident. Teaching/ Training in Transformative Techniques is required to stay tuned with change, adapt, and attain sustainable development.
Smartener Of Pace: SPEAKER at a recent webinar, made a statement that one who depends upon the juniors at work, and on son or daughter at home, for downloading apps or doing ‘net’work, is outdated. The message is clear- if you want to be in the race with grace, keep pace with the technology. Two smarteners are referred here for reckoning. First, the Social Media Advantage Reaping Technique means the awareness of the existing and near future SM platforms, their applicability for the tasks at hand and advantages that can be reaped. Social Media Leveraging Literacy is really a big wanting. At the same time, there is a catch 22 situation due to extreme So-Me-Phobia, making the second one, the Social Media Addiction Restriction Techniques imperative as the smartener Off Potholes.
Smartener Of Provider: Service-Centric economy, necessitates one to take help of yet another smartener. It is necessary to understand ‘Service’, in simple words, as an act of providing experience equal to or exceeding the expectations of the ‘Receiver’. Thus, as a ‘Provider’, one needs to be skilled for Service-Sensitivity. MENTION of sensitivity prompts the Mindfulness. It is the skill being conscious of surroundings yet focusing one's awareness on the present moment, It is significant to success of superior service delivery: ‘Being Present’ being the best ‘Present’ to the ‘Receiver’. LIFE (Learning Is For Everyone/From Everywhere) is the biggest teacher. Shortened employability cycles have induced a greater number of learning cycles during the length of career . One must imbibe Acquiring-Acumen to cope with relentless requirements of latest learnings. PROSPECTS-Receivers should become aware of one’s availability and ability as ‘Provider’. ‘Reaching out’ is the only rescuer in the world so complex and competitive. It requires: Constant Creative Communication with a person or people to help or involve them; Keeping in touch regularly to offer support to them; steadily trying to get their attention and interest in your arrival as provider. ENGAGEMENT is the pivotal to Encashment. ‘ME2WE’ perspective mentioned above cannot be put to perform without assimilating the ‘Teamer’s instinct’. The word itself provides few of the characteristics to cultivate in oneself: Team-playing- both as member and lead; Engagement of Everyone; Agree to Disagree knack ; Mentoring (and coaching) self and members; Execution-ability ; Reward-Recognition and Succeeding together.
Smartener Of Persona: Time is the only absolute resource, equally available to each person, for the successful journey of life. This success has three basic dimensions: Fitness, Fortune and Philanthropy. It is up to the individual to convert this absolute resource into an intermediate one of Healthy, Happy and Heavenly Time for achieving the ultimate success. The smartener stated here is like a lifeguard while sailing through the sea
of the struggle for success. SELFLESS Service in whatever capability and capacity revivifies the Soul, MEDIATION of whatever form and feature refreshes Mind. AND right and regular exercise routine reboots the Avtar (body-the physical existence). WE are creature of the nature and nurture ourselves on its elements for surviving living and thriving. As an effect of enablement through education, one should exert to reserve, refurbish, restrict, return, and restore these elements to Rejuvenate the environ itself. INSTILLING ability for Constant thinking and Conscious efforts to imbibe Culture of Thankfulness to Nature AND all givers, should be inherent part of the education.
